When Should I change my Filters?

Let’s face it, you probably aren’t changing your HVAC filters as often as you should be. If you are like the average homeowner, you’re reading this post and realizing you don’t remember the last time you changed them, or you’re realizing you may not have changed them at all. Let’s talk about how often you should change your filters and what factors into determining the proper frequency.

Picture this: your HVAC filter is like a pair of socks for your air system. If you wear the same pair for months, things start to get… stinky. To top it off you’d probably find that your socks aren’t doing their job, they’d release debris in your shoes and around your home and they probably wouldn’t be very comfortable. Same with your filter! Changing it regularly keeps your air fresh, your system happy, and your wallet chill. HVAC filters catch debris and keeps it from building up in your unit.

So, how often? The general rule of thumb is every 30 to 90 days, but it depends on a few things. Got pets? They’re adorable, but they also shed more hair and dander, so you might need to swap that filter every month. Allergy season making you sneeze like crazy? Time to be extra vigilant. Living solo in a clean, dust-free place? You can probably stretch it longer, but don't push your luck past three months.

Think of it like brushing your teeth, if you do it regularly, everything stays fresh and healthy. If you skip, well… nobody wants that. So set a little calendar reminder, or have a friendly Williams A/C & Heating tech do it for you as part of a residential planned maintenance plan. Your air and your nose will thank you!
